Our vision is to be the premier wind band in the Tampa Bay Area.
The Florida Wind Band is a non-profit organization in Tampa, Florida, encompassing three individual wind ensembles aimed at providing talented local musicians of all ages a musical outlet for performance. In addition to our primary adult wind ensemble comprised of the area’s top professional and semi-professional musicians, the Florida Wind Band is the parent organization to Bay Area Youth (BAY) Winds and Junior BAY Winds. Both youth ensembles are aimed at providing additional high-level performance opportunities for local talented middle and high school students.
Wind bands are an integral part of the American history and culture. At one time touring professional bands, such as those led by John Philip Sousa and Edwin Franko Goldman, drew enormous crowds for every concert. Recently, there has been a new growth of community wind bands which provide an opportunity for talented musicians to continue playing through their adulthood.
When John Carmichael moved to Tampa in 2007 to become the Director of Bands at the University of South Florida, he immediately set the ground work for a new professional wind band. He believed that the Tampa Bay area has the unique ability to support such an ensemble because of the number of professional musicians in the area and the potential for audience response.
In 2008, the Florida Wind Band debuted to an appreciative audience, and has since performed 12 successful seasons, including performances for the American Bandmaster's Association and the College Band Directors National Association. The Florida Wind Band strives to be Tampa Bay's premier wind band, bringing performances of high quality wind band music to the community. John Carmichael retired from USF in 2018 and moved to Kansas City to be closer to family, at which point Dr. Matthew McCutchen was appointed as the Conductor/Artistic Director.
The group continues to grow and thrive in this community due to the selfless work by our volunteers and generous support from the community.
