About Us

Wind bands are an integral part of the American history and culture. At one time touring professional bands, such as those led by John Philip Sousa and Edwin Franko Goldman, drew enormous crowds for every concert. Recently, there has been a new growth of community wind bands which provide an opportunity for talented musicians to continue playing through their adulthood.

When John Carmichael moved to Tampa in 2007 to become the Director of Bands at the University of South Florida, he immediately set the ground work for a new professional wind band. He believed that the Tampa Bay area has the unique ability to support such an ensemble because of the number of professional musicians in the area and the potential for audience response.

In 2008, the Florida Wind Band debuted to an appreciative audience, and has since performed 11 successful seasons, including performances for the American Bandmaster's Association and the College Band Directors National Association. The Florida Wind Band strives to be Tampa Bay's premier professional wind band, bringing performances of high quality wind band music to the community.

The band has been able to thrive in this community due to the selfless work by our volunteers and generous support from the community. To support our mission and find out about donation and sponsorship opportunities, please visit our sponsorships page.
